Laboratory Intelligence - How to benefit optimally from the information stored in your LIMS
This issue of LimsPoint is dedicated to Laboratory Intelligence. We want to share with you some ideas and examples of how to benefit optimally from the data in your LIMS, regardless of which LIMS your laboratory has. Traditionally, the primary goal for service laboratories was to produce Certificates of Analyses, and for industrial quality control labs to inform that a production lot could be released. Today, laboratories realise that the laboratory processes need to be continuously monitored and improved in order to increase cost effectiveness and quality of service. Over the years, Software Point has developed a suite of add-ons for our LIMS, which all target increased automation in the laboratory, for better customer service, including eServices for laboratory customers and efficient tools for viewing and treating results.
Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence are used for statistical presentation of data. Typical applications are measurement of laboratory throughput, customer-specific order values, sample amounts and types, reporting to authorities regarding findings, etc. There is a variety of tools to choose from, many of which are already integrated with LIMS, such as BusinessObjects, Jaspersoft, and QlikView. Tools like Oracle BI, MS Reporting Services and Cognos are also used by many laboratories.
eServices are becoming a must for service laboratories. Many of them offer their customers two-way communication, including a possibility to log in requests and to access results directly via a web-service.
In separate articles in this LimsPoint, some of our customers describe their solutions.
