Industry to Show the Way for Workflow Management in Health Care Laboratories Published: December 20, 2005

The Espoo software company Software Point is using funding from the FinnWell programme to develop an enterprise resource planning system for laboratory activities in the health services. The product is also expected to have a demand internationally, as the health care information systems in the Nordic countries, for instance, are usually older than in Finland.

Software Point is a newcomer to the IT market for the health services. It has previously supplied laboratory software for the steel, petrochemical and food industries, basic chemistry and the wood processing and pharmaceutical industries.

"The industry is interested in the development of processes through information technology. They are speaking about LIMS systems. The term comes from the words "laboratory information management systems". The health care systems are LIS systems. This abbreviation is derived from the words "laboratory information systems". Our mission is to introduce the letter M, for management, into the IT systems of health care laboratories", Managing Director Andrea Holmberg says.

LIS means that the IT in health services has only concentrated on the transmission of results. Industry meanwhile uses LIMS systems to develop their activities. Information systems help, among other things, to monitor the turn-around time of laboratory samples, how many tests have been produced per customer, or if some instruments involve bottlenecks such that the results cannot be delivered to the customer at sufficient speed. LIMS systems are also used in quality control.

Flexibility of maintenance and updating important
Software Point has affiliates in all the Nordic countries, and its staff has wide experience in both chemistry and the IT business. Andrea Holmberg thus defines her people as "IT- chemists". The company became interested in the health services, as inquiries came from the field on the possibility to utilise the experience acquired in industry to develop enterprise resource planning for laboratory operations in health care.

The FinnWell project aims at creating the first version of an application for the development of the operations of clinical laboratories. It will be a comprehensive system to cover all the areas of laboratory operations, including but not limited to clinical chemistry, microbiology and pathology. They also want to arrange pilots in all these areas.

One of the current IT problems in laboratories is, according to Holmberg, the fact that many hospitals are using a number of LIS systems provided by different suppliers. It makes using and updating them a difficult and costly business.

Thus an important feature of future systems is the flexibility of maintenance and updating, as the operating processes change, there will be new software versions, and rather new equipment will be connected to the systems.

Espoolainen ohjelmistoyritys Software Point kehittää FinnWell-ohjelman rahoituksella toiminnanohjausjärjestelmää terveydenhuollon laboratoriotoimintaan. Tuotteella odotetaan olevan myös kansainvälistä kysyntää, sillä esimerkiksi Pohjoismaissa terveydenhuollon tietojärjestelmät ovat yleensä vanhempia kuin Suomessa.

Software Point on uusi tulokas terveydenhuollon tietotekniikkamarkkinoilla. Se on aikaisemmin toimittanut laboratorio-ohjelmistoja muun muassa teräs-, petrokemian- ja elintarviketeollisuudelle, peruskemialle sekä puunjalostus- ja lääketeollisuudelle.

"Teollisuudessa ollaan kiinnostuneita prosessien kehittämisestä tietotekniikan avulla. Siellä puhutaan LIMS-järjestelmistä. Termi tulee sanoista laboratory information management systems. Terveydenhuollon järjestelmä ovat LIS-järjestelmiä. Tämä lyhenne syntyy sanoista laboratory information systems. Meidän missiomme on tuoda M-kirjain eli management terveydenhuollon laboratorioiden tietoteknisiin järjestelmiin", toimitusjohtaja Andrea Holmberg kertoo.

LIS tarkoittaa sitä, että terveydenhuollon tietotekniikka on keskittynyt yksinomaan tulosten välittämiseen. Teollisuus puolestaan pyrkii kehittämän LIMS-järjestelmien avulla toimintaansa.

Tietojärjestelmien avulla pystytään esimerkiksi seuraamaan laboratorionäytteiden läpimenoaikoja, montako suoritetta on tuotettu asiakasta kohti tai onko jollakin laitteella sellaisia pullonkauloja, että tuloksia ei saada asiakkaalle riittävän nopeasti. Lisäksi LIMS-järjestelmiä käytetään laadunhallintaan.

Ylläpidon ja päivittämisen joustavuus tärkeää
Software Pointilla on tytäryritys kaikissa Pohjoismaissa, ja sen henkilökunnalla on sekä kemian että it-alan laaja kokemus. Andrea Holmberg määritteleekin väkensä it-kemisteiksi. Terveydenhuollosta yritys kiinnostui, koska alalta tuli tiedusteluja mahdollisuudesta hyödyntää teollisuudesta saatua kokemusta terveydenhuollon laboratorioiden toiminnanohjauksen kehittämiseen

FinnWell-projektin tavoitteena on luoda ensimmäinen versio sovelluksesta, jota voidaan käyttää kliinisten laboratorioiden toiminnan kehittämiseen. Kyseessä on kokonaisvaltainen järjestelmä eli se kattaa kaikki laboratoriotoiminnan osa-alueet. Mukaan halutaan myös pilotteja kaikilta osa-alueilta.

Yksi nykyisten laboratorioiden tietotekniikan ongelma Holmbergin mukaan on se, että monissa sairaaloissa on käytössä useita LIS-järjestelmiä usealta eri toimittajalta. Se tekee käytöstä ja päivittämisestä hankalaa ja kallista.

Tulevaisuuden järjestelmissä yksi tärkeä ominaisuus onkin ylläpidon ja päivittämisen joustavuus, sillä toimintaprosessit muuttuvat, ohjelmista tulee uusia versioita ja järjestelmiin liitetään aivan uusia laitteita
