Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira) integrates laboratory information systems with Software Point LIMS

The Finnish Food Safety Authority, Evira, has signed an agreement with Software Point for a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). During 2009-2012, all the existing laboratory information systems will be replaced. The delivery will be based on LabVantage Sapphire LIMS. The new system will be built so that laboratories within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry can also take it into use. The total value of the purchase is around 1-2 million Euros.

Evira will eventually have one common system for all its operations, replacing the previous separate systems. “Well-functioning laboratory system is extremely important for all laboratories, not just for us. Evira has high expectations for the new system; the target is that the information produced by laboratories and control will serve the customer even better than at present, and at the same time, reporting and statistics will improve. The work has started smoothly,” says Tuula Honkanen-Buzalski, head of the research and analytical department in Evira.

”For us, this is a notably large order” states Andrea Holmberg, CEO of Software Point. “Over the past few years, the trend both in the public and industrial sectors has been towards distinctly larger entities, where the customer can benefit financially on the integration of several separate systems. Our solutions are based on modern web technology, which in itself brings savings since the time needed for installations and training is reduced considerably.”

The operation of the Food Safety Authority focuses on ensuring the safety of food, promoting the health and welfare of animals, and providing the required preconditions for plant and animal production, as well as plant health. Evira laboratory operations are broad and multi-functional; the main areas are in the diagnostics of animal and plant disease, and the inspection of food and feed safety.

Elintarviketurvallisuusvirasto Evira yhtenäistää laboratorionsa tietojärjestelmät Software Pointin ohjelmistolla

Software Point ja Elintarviketurvallisuusvirasto Evira ovat allekirjoittaneet sopimuksen uudesta tietojärjestelmästä. Vuosien 2009-2011 aikana kaikkien laboratorioiden nykyiset  järjestelmät korvataan. Laboratorioiden ja valvonnan toiminnot toteutetaan Sapphire  LIMS–ohjelmistolla.  Uusi järjestelmä rakennetaan siten , että se mahdollistaa Maa- ja metsätalousministeriön muidenkin laboratorioiden ottavan saman järjestelmän käyttöönsä. Hankinnan kokonaisarvo on pari miljoonaa euroa.  

Evirassa tulee olemaan jatkossa toimintojen osalta yksi yhteinen järjestelmä, joka korvaa aiemmat erilliset järjestelmät. ”Hyvin toimiva laboratoriojärjestelmä on erittäin tärkeä asia kaikille laboratorioille, myös meille. Eviralla on korkeat odotukset uuden järjestelmän suhteen. Tavoitteena on, että Eviran laboratorioiden ja valvonnan tuottama tieto tullaan saamaan entistä paremmin asiakkaita palvelevaksi ja samalla erilaiset yhteenveto- ja raportoinnit paranevat. Työ on lähtenyt hyvin käyntiin.” kertoo Tuula Honkanen-Buzalski, Eviran tutkimus- ja analytiikkaosaston osastonjohtaja.

”Kyseessä on meille huomattavan kokoluokan tilaus”, toteaa Software Pointin toimitusjohtaja Andrea Holmberg. ”Viime vuosina trendi on sekä julkisella sektorilla että teollisuudessa ollut selvästi suurempiin kokonaisuuksiin, joissa asiakkaille muodostuu taloudellista hyötyä järjestelmien yhtenäistämisestä. Ratkaisumme perustuvat moderniin selaintekniikkaan, mikä sinänsä tuo säästöjä, koska asennuksiin ja koulutukseen menevä aika pienenee huomattavasti.”

Elintarviketurvallisuusvirasto Eviran tehtävänä on varmistaa elintarvikkeiden turvallisuus, edistää eläinten terveyttä ja hyvinvointia, huolehtia kasvin- ja eläintuotannon edellytyksistä sekä kasvinterveydestä. Eviran laboratoriotoiminta on hyvin monipuolista. Keskeisimmät alueet ovat eläin- ja kasvitautien diagnostiikka sekä elintarvikkeiden ja rehujen turvallisuuteen liittyvät tutkimukset.
